Knowing what Om means is to understand the depth of its value on our behalf. It is a simple sound, just a word, the vibration and mere presence can do wonders for your spiritual and mental health, and your happiness.

It’s just so important to attend to our happiness, stress management and release bad energy that even the World Health Organization recommends alternative therapies and practices like yoga and meditation for the treatment and prevention of various diseases, including psychological ailments, hypertension and many more.

The sacred syllable Om is a mantra used in routines sessions and spiritual well-being both at the start, opening the mind and heart to practice, as well as at the end of each activity, in gratitude and strengthen our connection to the whole universe. In many cultures it is considered one Pranava mantra, or “vibrant prayer,” and also as Udgitha or “strong edge”, the way in which it is used to connect with the energy of the sounds and the environment.

But to fully understand what is Om, we must think in spiritual terms: this is the primordial sound mantra, that is divine and powerful, and is the strongest connection with your inner self in all your plans.

How do you pronounce the mantra Om?

This mantra is considered regent high spiritual power, capable of uniting, by vibrating sounds spiritual and physical planes. In our language, the proper way to pronounce it is through sound ‘AUM’, three of its four components: the sounds of A, U and M, and the fourth element is the silence, essential to allow the vibrations of Om traveling by air, involving us and give us their huge profits.

Traditionally, the mantra Om is sung in good voice, carrying the sounds one might severe or profound, without forcing or worry about intonation, but only in its correct enunciation:

  • The first sound is a long and vague to the end, as “ah”, pronounced with vigor and energy force from the chest, activating the solar plexus chakra
  • The second is a long U sound, “uu” emitted from the back of the mouth and the beginning of the throat, feeling the vibration in the throat chakra
  • The third sound of Om is the lasting M, “mmmm” lips together and relaxed. Your vibration is felt in the mouth and around the face and head, activating the third eye chakra
  • The fourth sound is silence, allowing the vibrations to travel and involve us.
  • These sounds of Om, when pronounced, symbolize the divine energy (Shakti), creation (Bhrahma Shakti), preservation (Vishnu Shakti) and spiritual liberation (Shiva Shakti).

How is Om used?

To use the mantra Om should just take a deep breath, filling your lungs, and release air to cleanse the mind of all thoughts. On your second breath, releases air thoroughly pronouncing sounds, ending with the M lasting until all the air in your lungs, and remained silent a few seconds before inhaling again and repeat the cycle.

In general rules, the Om is repeated three times, but you can do it as many times as you like. In meditations, relaxations or group sessions welfare may be sung in unison or in cycles: starting the first person to utter sounds and, when finished with the first and switches to the second, start enunciation the person sitting to his left, circle. When the second person starts the second sound of Om, the third person starts with the first sound, and so fulfill the three replicates all people in the group, remaining silent a few seconds at the end.
