Quick Slants for October 26, 2008

It’s nine days until the 2008 Presidential Election.

- I had to pinch myself this morning to make sure I wasn’t still dreaming. The Pantagraph, my hometown newspaper - normally a Republican Party apologist - actually got it right and endorsed Barack Obama this morning.

Among their comments:

One thing that has been consistent about Obama, going back at least to his days as a Harvard law student, is his contemplative decision-making style. His willingness to listen to what others have to say, weighing the pros and cons before reaching a conclusion is a welcome change. It’s time for a leader who can mend our image abroad.

Obama has promised a responsible disengagement from Iraq. He has pledged to meet the escalating threat in Afghanistan. He promises a return to dialogue with friends and enemies alike.

At home, we believe he will be consultative in his approach to solving our difficult economic problems. It just takes the right leadership to harness the energy of great minds, leaving all the political nonsense behind.

Well, if this doesn’t tell people how far to the right and to the extreme the McCain campaign and Republicans have veered, nothing will.

- Sticking with the hometown theme for a moment… if last week’s Illinois State Homecoming loss to Missouri State didn’t clinch the idea that Denver Johnson won’t be returning next year as head football coach, then I’m sure yesterday’s 25-7 home loss to North Dakota State helped.

Johnson’s record to date for ISU:

2000: 7 wins, 4 losses
2001: 2 wins, 9 losses (9-13 overall, .409)
2002: 6 wins, 5 losses (15-18 overall, .455)
2003: 6 wins, 6 losses (21-24 overall, .467)
2004: 4 wins, 7 losses (25-31 overall, .446)
2005: 7 wins, 4 losses (32-35 overall, .478)
2006: 9 wins, 4 losses - made playoffs (41-39 overall, .513)
2007: 4 wins, 7 losses (45-46 overall, .495)
2008: 2 wins, 5 losses to date (47-51 overall, .480)

Given that he is in his ninth year at ISU but has a losing record overall and has only been to the playoffs once, I can’t see how he is going to keep his job once this season ends. I’d like to believe that Illinois State will eventually move into the Bowl-division of NCAA Division One football, but don’t see it happening with Johnson at the helm.

- Staying with sports, if we didn’t already know that Isiah Thomas was an idiot, he has been so kind to prove it once again. Thomas is disputing reports that he was treated for an accidental overdose of sleeping pills. Rather than simply deal with that bit of press up front, Thomas instead decided to throw his 17 year old daughter under the bus, saying it was she that needed treatment. Needless to say, local authorities dispute this. But Isiah, welcome to the Golden Momo recipients.

- The McCain campaign seems a bit peeved that Sarah Palin is “going rogue.” I would think they would be happy with this; it’s about the only real coverage that they get that doesn’t involve race-baiting and hate-mongering.

- Another Momo this morning: Barbara West of WFTV in Orlando, Florida. Below is her interview with Joe Biden, in which she seems to be trying out for the Fixed Noise crew. Seriously, listen to these questions… it’s like she is channeling Sean Hannity. Biden hits each one out of the park before nailing her at the end of the piece. Well done, Joe.

- Here’s a good op-ed piece which makes a good argument that the GOP is the “party of yesterday.”

- Wow, you know it’s tough for the GOP when their attempts at voter suppression are even coming up short.

- John McCain is guaranteeing a victory next Tuesday night, but that it will be late in the night before such a victory is clear. Well John, I know millions of people who will be glad to help you get to sleep a little earlier that night.

- Turd Blossom thinks all the GOP finger-pointing is sad. And I just think the GOP is sad.

- Finally, some more stupid human tricks - an avowed “proud racist” and other misfits following a McCain/Palin rally.

The interview with the lady from Florida is just priceless…

  2. Rick Says:

Yeah… why didn’t she just come out and say, “Senator, could you explain why you and Barack Obama are evil communist bastards bent on the destruction of the United States? It would have saved her at least three questions! :-)

The Military is desperately sad today I can tell you. The military quite obviously due to its function and purpose is not full of Democrats (they’re pussies who don’t fight, well physically where it counts globally anyway) for their own rights which would quickly cause their deaths in true fascist type countries, Iran, Russia, China etc.

Now the Democrats, which by a vast vast majority in the US military, think of as pussy communists, have got there man in the white house.

We in the military are devasted that our fellow citizens have taken a shit upon us in electing this man. He will not be greeted with a warm welcome from us, by and large I guarantee you.

Looks like Democrats will have to join the military or invoke a draft to defend the USA now.

Nah, they don’t do that. LOL

Say goodbye to USA and embrace USSA!

Those of you who voted such, better be able to learn foreign languages fast, as that’ll save you in the coming years.

And where is the voter suppresion “claims” from Republicans THIS TIME? I mean when Bush won, the net was full of such blathering, isn’t it funny that there is NONE when Obama won.

Could it be that Diebold doesn’t run elections and there is no voter fraud?

Nah, it’s only possible that voter faud happens when Democrats LOSE!

Give me a break, Democrats are sick and pussies, and America votes how America votes after all is the lesson.

I hope this little Demosocialist pussy victory doesn’t cost our country the ultimate price, being taken over by foreign invaders as Obama has no balls, like typical left wingers in America.

We’re in mourning in the military. (look up what mourning means demoidiots).

  5. Rick Says:

With all due respect to your service…

Our military is now broken… because of Republicans.

We have tortured… because of Republicans.

We have engaged in an illegal invasion and occupation of another nation… because of Republicans.

We have committed war crimes… because of Republicans.

We are at just as much risk now as we were on 9/11… because of Republicans.

We treat our returning veterans like crap… because of Republicans.

Quit listening to Fox News talking points and start thinking for yourself. Under Barack Obama, you and other service men and women are far more likely not to have your lives wasted in meaningless (and illegal) actions. We will now go after those responsible for attacking our nation, as opposed to being distracted with the bullshit smokescreen in Iraq. And we will be held in higher esteem by other nations, making future armed conflicts a little less frequent and a little less necessary.

  6. Rick Says:

There WAS voter suppression on the part of Republicans… in Virginia, in Iowa, and in Georgia (from what I can tell so far).

It just didn’t matter. The American people spoke out so loudly that bullshit Republican tricks couldn’t save their sorry asses this time.
